District POV: Promoting positive mental health in a pandemic

What is our students’ current state of mental health? What role does mental health need to play in a district’s strategy for distance learning? In this session, Dr. Denise Zimmermann, Director of Mental Health for Spring ISD in Houston, explains why mental health is so critical right now, and why the shift to distance and hybrid learning models has made managing it more challenging. Dr. Zimmermann reveals what’s worked and what hasn’t in her district’s response plan, and why promoting positive mental health begins with understanding how it differs from social-emotional learning.

Motivating education’s essential workers: Teachers

Students aren’t showing up. Parents who aren’t engaged — or who might be a little too engaged. Being responsible for executing a plan that seems to be changing by the day. Teachers have heroically taken on the front-line challenges of educating students during a pandemic, but they’re still human. In this session, a group of educators from across the country will discuss the real tensions that exist in our school systems and have an honest conversation about how administrators can motivate and support teachers during a school year unlike any other.
